In 1966 my art teacher Mr. Jones told me I had to apply for a foundation course at Barnsley School of Art instead of my original intention to apply to be a Scientific Assistant at the newly built Dounreay Nuclear Power Station. Thankyou Jack Jomes, I have been grateful all my life for that decision.

We always liked to pray for ART in the graveyard...
resting in the graveyard
....and after a long day praying we would rest ourselves on the grave stones.

One of the projects involved collecting waste cardboard boxes from the local shops to make an environment. It was great to get involved with the latest ideas at the time but I always had a passion for the Renaissance as Leonardo and Michelangelo were my true heros after being influenced by Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopedia.
Paintings on cartridge paper at home influenced by the Renaissance
My paintings always referenced the old masters. Leonardo's Virgin of the Rocks in the National Gallery, London has always been in my soul for all of my time in life, I've made at least 4 copies , each one another second later than the original...
Mr. Glover served as the Principal of Barnsley Art School, embodying the classic image of an established figure with his distinctive handlebar moustache. I fondly recall him sharing his story about restoring a vintage Rolls Royce, which began with him renovating the engine right in his living room. As he diligently worked on the project, he eventually completed the entire body of the car, only to realize that he would need to demolish part of the wall to get the vehicle out.

......and so as we were submerged in our own little worlds full of 'creativity' the real world just outside the boundaries of the town was the reality of the 'Doss-House'. These Victorian buildings have been used for overnight lodging by those who needed the lowest-cost alternative to staying with others, shelters, or sleeping outside. Generally, rooms are small, bathrooms are shared, and bedding is minimal,. The Abattoir was just across the road.

......and by taking these photos it certainly instilled a reality in me for the rest of my life.

......and who was to know what would lay ahead in the future?
